Samsung has updated the user interface for its smart home app SmartThings, replacing the slightly muted color scheme of the old app — full of grays and earth tones — with a new UI and overall fresher look. The new interface launches on Android today with the iOS version “to follow” at some unknown time in the future, says Samsung.
While the interface of the old app was oriented around the different rooms users had assigned for their smart home gadget, the new layout now focuses on five spaces:
- Favorites – a new homescreen, with quick access to users’ most-used devices and scenes (scheduled routines, like for the morning or leaving the house).
- Devices – for a full list of all connected smart devices.
- Life – for access to Samsung’s add-on services, like SmartThings Cooking (which is supposed to help you sort shopping lists and recipes into a cohesive life plan).
- Automations – for creating and organizing Samsung’s if-this-then-that automations, like triggering lights based on motion sensors and so on.
- Menu – for everything else, including notifications, settings, and device history.
That’s all the information and images we have for now of the new SmartThings app, but it seems like a sensible enough update. We’ll have to see how it works in person to get a better idea.
It’s nice to see Samsung paying a little attention to SmartThings for once, but updating the app is about the bare minimum the company can do. It’s stopped making original hardware for its smart home platform, and is outsourcing the work to third parties to make “SmartThings compatible” devices. The company says it’s onboard with Matter, the new smart home alliance which includes Google, Amazon, and Apple among its members, but we haven’t yet seen specific details for how that will impact current SmartThings owners..
The SmartThings app is also available to download for Windows PCs, though it doesn’t seem like that app is getting an update along with the Android and iOS versions.
