If you’re American, you might call this a pound or number sign. Whereas other countries in the world refer to this (#) to as a ‘Hash’ symbol.

Hashtags basically function as keywords. You can click them to see more posts about the keyword.

Twitter was the first social media platform to introduce hashtags in 2007. Since then, many other social platforms have adopted them.

Now let’s look at the process of creating hashtags.

How do you add hashtags on Instagram?

Again, hashtags allow you to categorize Instagram posts into different buckets.

Here’s an example:

Say you want to see posts related to digital marketing. No problem. Just click in the search bar on Instagram and type in #digitalmarketing.

Such hashtags are used every time you make a post about your social media handles.

Some examples of branded hashtags are #nike, #picmaker, #Instagram, #LouisVuitton, etc.

Here’s an example of Louis Vuitton using their branded hashtag on one of their posts, featuring a member of the South Korean boy band, BTS.

2. Hashtags related to a product or service

This category is a subset of the first category.

Although your products and services are offered by your brand, you can create separate categories for them too.

Sometimes you can also choose already available categories for products and services.

For example, some of the product hashtags from Nike could be #shoes, #whiteshoes, #whitesneakers, etc.

3. Community hashtags

This is a great way to index your posts among already well-established hashtags or communities on Instagram.

For example, if you’re a musician, you can use hashtags like ‘#musiciansofInstagram’ to index your post among the community on international musicians.

Let’s go a step further and assume that you’re a musician in New York.

You could also use a hashtag like ‘#musiciansofny’ to index your post on that page.

The other way brands can use this is by developing their own hashtag.

4. Custom campaign hashtags

These are custom hashtags created to track campaigns run by brands on Instagram.

One example of this is #nationafriedchickenday by KFC.

Although this was not their brand hashtag, it was highly relatable to their core offering — fried chicken.

They used the hashtag to their benefit on all their Twitter and Instagram posts.

Now, that’s what we call smart usage of hashtags!

On the other hand, Coca-Cola inserted #shareacoke into their famous campaign.

5. Location hashtags

These hashtags are based on certain locations in the world.

It can be anything like #newyork, #california, #italy, #india.

6. Event hashtags

These are hashtags created for events and conferences organized around the world.

One good example of event hashtags is the ‘#olympics’ used during the Olympics. Based on the country in which they are hosted, these hashtags can be further split into multiple categories.

While that looks at the function and internal meaning of a hashtag, here’s how you can do it differently.

1. High competition Instagram hashtags

Instagram hashtags that have more than 250,000 posts fall into the category of high-competition Instagram hashtags.

These are generic hashtags like #digitalmarketing, #marketing, and #sales.

Here’s an example page of a high competition Instagram hashtag:

This page has more than 15,549,561 posts, which puts it at the top of the competition.

2. Medium-competition Instagram hashtags

Medium competition hashtags are in the range of 85,000 to 250,000 posts.

7 Instagram hashtag mistakes you should avoid

Mistake #1: Keeping your profile private

A private profile is one of the worst things you can do for your hashtag strategy.

If your profile is private, Instagram won’t index your posts on any hashtag pages.

Let’s assume that you have included the following hashtags on your post: #marketing, #sales, #future.

Instagram will only index your posts on the following hashtag pages if your profile is public.

Here’s an example of a public profile.

With a public profile, you can view all it’s contents even if you aren’t following it.

Now, here’s an example of a private profile:

Even if this account uses 100 different hashtags on all their posts, it wouldn’t be indexed on the hashtag pages.

Mistake #2: Using banned hashtags on Instagram

Instagram has a number of banned hashtags you should stay away from.

These hashtags are banned because Instagram users have termed them to be spammy or irrelevant.

One rule of thumb is to insert your hashtag into the “Instagram search bar” and see if it has been flagged.

For example, you might think that ‘#alone’ is completely harmless.

But once you run a search on Instagram, you will find that this hashtag has been flagged for inappropriate use.

Adding too many banned hashtags on your profile , may flag your profile as spammy.

Mistake #3: Being too generic with your hashtag approach

I want to walk you now through a quick test for cognitive disorders, so cognitive disorders result primarily from primary or secondary abnormalities of the central nervous system. They can affect memory and orientation, attention and judgment. The mini mental status exam is used to test cognitive function.

Now this is a great screening tool and it's one that should actually be included in any mental status exam that you do for the patient. It's quick, it's short, it's easy and again it's a screening tool and it will tell you whether or not you need to dig a little bit deeper into determining if there is in fact a cognitive problem.

But because errors in cognition can come with all kinds of psychiatric disorders even general medical conditions, consider things like depression and psychosis, sometimes poor memory and concentration can be features of these illnesses. That’s why it's really important to get some baseline MMSE on every patient you encounter.

Now, the mini mental status exam, it is also called a Folstein, it's scored out of 30 points and really anyone following below a 26 probably has some problems that need a little digger deeping into figuring out what’s going on there with their cognition. So there are a lot of things that you can test for and again this is scored out of 30 points.

Here’s a chart that helps to summarize a little bit about what you're looking for. Things like orientation for the patient, do they know what the month and year is? Do they know where they are? That it's a hospital, what floor they're on or whether it's an outpatient clinic? What city they’re in, etc.

So you're really gonna score them there based on their orientation. You're gonna want them to name 3 objects and register them, meaning repeat them right back to you. You wanna be able to test for their attention by giving them some calculations or spelling quiz. Now before you do this step, it's really important that you know the educational level of your patient so that you can tailor the exam to meet them where they're at.

You wanna know about their recall so you ask them to repeat the 3 words they had registered 5 minutes previously. And then you're gonna score patients by asking them to name simple objects like a pen and a clock. Ask them to repeat a sentence after you and give them a 3-step command to follow. So other things that you're gonna do is see how well they can complete tasks.

Tell them to close their eyes, have them write a sentence, and have them copy a design which should be 3-dimensional and something that they're able to construct without problem. So you’ll score all of these and in summary, the mini mental status exam is testing all kinds of things, orientation, alertness, patient’s language skills, you're testing their executive functioning, their recall, their memory.

You may also, as part of this exam, throw in some obstructions to see how well they can join objects together. Do they know that an apple and an orange are similar because they're fruits? That’s a good example of an abstract thinker or somebody who’s more concrete is gonna say, well, they are both round, which is not so good of an answer.

So I wanna tell you about two other quick tests that you can do in terms of checking cognition. So sometimes these come up on exams and on the words so they're worth noting. Now when you're suspecting a cognitive disorder in a patient, let’s say you've screened them with the mini mental status exam, they didn’t do so well.

So you wanna take a one step further or maybe give them a MoCA, the Montreal Cognitive Assessment. This is a brief screening tool, only takes about 10 minutes to deliver and it really tests a variety of things. It can test… compared with the MMSE, it tests things that are a little more sensitive to the detection of a mild cognitive impairment.

Okay, so there’s a wider range of domains here that you are looking at, including memory and language, attention, also visuospatial things, and executive functions. For example, the MoCA includes little quizzes like drawing a clock, telling it to say a certain time and includes a trail making sequence.

They test how quickly a person can name words starting with the certain letter within a minute, so it just a little bit more challenging than the MMSE and a little bit more new ones. There's also a test called the mini-cog and this is a clock drawing test and also a test of recall. And this can be really important and a really quick way to assess whether or not somebody is having some cognitive trouble.

The clock drawing test is a great way to really see if people are able to connect the sequence of ideas and strategize and do something in a goal-oriented task driven way. And then with a recall of three words, you can really quickly just see how somebody’s memory is based of, of whether they can recall all three words easily or if it's a struggle to even come up with one.

So the advantages of the mini-cog again are the high sensitivity for predicting dementia, the short testing time because it really takes only a couple of minutes compared to the mini mental status exam or MoCA which may take about 7-10 minutes each. And there is a little bit of diagnostic value that’s limited in the mini-cog because it's so short but it's a good way to just clue you in and as to whether or not there might be a serious cognition problem that you need to dig deeper for.

So you're familiar now with the few quick screening tools, I’d say for your exam the ones to remember is the mini mental status exam and note that this is important to do not only in patients who may have cognitive trouble but really you should include it as part of your mental status exam for all patients.

For In-Person School, Fulfilling Students’ Wish Lists

Catherine Fils’s three children were all starting at new schools. And this year, she was determined to continue their annual tradition.

“Every first day of school, for the first week,” she said, “you’ve got to have new clothes.”

Ms. Fils wanted to make sure her children — Anthony, 17; Jalen, 14; and Jazmine, 11 — could pick out new outfits and feel confident on their first days at new schools on Staten Island.

The family had been living in an apartment in Brooklyn a few years ago, but after issues arose there, Ms. Fils moved her family into a homeless shelter. Soon after they moved, the coronavirus pandemic took hold of the city and schooling became virtual.

Ms. Fils, 33, worked hard to keep her children in good spirits. They played board games and did puzzles.

“Something new or different,” Ms. Fils said, “just so they could take their mind off of everything.”

But strains in the shelter mounted. The children had trouble connecting to the internet and were sometimes unable to hear the lessons.

“It was a whole fight,” Ms. Fils said about navigating online school.

On top of the technological problems, Ms. Fils was taking her children to stay with family members on the days she had work as a home health aide. She would wake them up at 5 or 6 a.m. to go to relatives’ homes before her shifts began at 8. After about a year, Ms. Fils’s children were exhausted, and she decided she had to quit her job and help them with school full-time.

“It wasn’t easy, because then you got to think about, you’re losing money,” she said. “You’re making it worse.”

In June 2021, Ms. Fils and her family were able to move into an apartment on Staten Island. Her children were excited, especially about having a kitchen, which they had not had in the shelter — all of her children know how to cook, and Anthony especially likes to invent new recipes, Ms. Fils said.

As summer break wound down, Ms. Fils was relieved that her children would once again be attending school in person, but the costs of supplies and clothing loomed.

“At first I was like OK, thank God they get to go back,” Ms. Fils said. “But then I was like, dang, now I’ve got to buy school supplies. And as they get older, the supplies get more.”

This year, sensing a need from the families they work with, Children’s Aid, one of the nine organizations supported by The New York Times Neediest Cases Fund, set aside $150,000 from The Fund to distribute Target gift cards to help with back-to-school expenses.

“We wanted to make sure that we could get the cards in hand very quickly, and get them into families’ hands very quickly,” said Georgia Boothe, the executive vice president of Children’s Aid. Close to 900 families received gift cards totaling $100 to $500.

“Many of them appreciated that we offered it as a support to them, rather than them having to express their needs specifically,” Ms. Boothe said. “They were incredibly grateful for that.”

Ms. Fils received a $300 Target gift card from Children’s Aid, which she used to buy school supplies and new clothes for her children. She said that Anthony was especially excited about a NASCAR T-shirt, and Jalen looked forward to wearing a top featuring anime characters.

Alyssa Tucker, 29, who received a $100 gift card, was grateful that the help from Children’s Aid gave her the flexibility to spend it on what made the most sense for her family. She already had school supplies and clothes, so she bought her 5-year-old daughter, Autumn, a pumpkin-shape bucket for trick-or-treating. And in preparation for Christmas, she bought Barbies, which she has hidden in her closet.

Among the many New York City parents concerned about the return to in-person school was Debrina Mitchell.

In the spring, when her 9-year-old son, Elijah, was heading back to the classroom, she realized she didn’t have new clothes for him. “I didn’t expect for him to go back to school,” said Ms. Mitchell, 32.

Ms. Mitchell confided in a counselor from the HOPE Program, a job training program that she had participated in, about her worries. The counselor helped her get in touch with Community Service Society, another organization supported by The Fund. With its help, Ms. Mitchell purchased $330.91 in new clothing for Elijah.

“I felt so happy about it,” Ms. Mitchell said. The new clothes, including T-shirts with Spider-Man and dinosaurs on them, made Elijah “feel so excited” about returning to school in person. Ms. Mitchell said that she was especially proud of how much her son valued his new clothing.

“I was happy at the fact that he appreciated it,” she said. “That right there meant that it was worth asking for help.”

How do you add hashtags on Instagram?

Again, hashtags allow you to categorize Instagram posts into different buckets.

Here’s an example:

Say you want to see posts related to digital marketing. No problem. Just click in the search bar on Instagram and type in #digitalmarketing.

So let’s take a look at the different types of hashtags used on Instagram.

1: Branded hashtags

Branded hashtags feature names of your organization, product or service.

Such hashtags are used every time you make a post about your social media handles.

Some examples of branded hashtags are #nike, #picmaker, #Instagram, #LouisVuitton, etc.

Here’s an example of Louis Vuitton using their branded hashtag on one of their posts, featuring a member of the South Korean boy band, BTS.

NOTE: #BTS is also another branded hashtag on this post.

2. Hashtags related to a product or service

This category is a subset of the first category.

Although your products and services are offered by your brand, you can create separate categories for them too.

Sometimes you can also choose already available categories for products and services.

For example, some of the product hashtags from Nike could be #shoes, #whiteshoes, #whitesneakers, etc.

3. Community hashtags

This is a great way to index your posts among already well-established hashtags or communities on Instagram.

For example, if you’re a musician, you can use hashtags like ‘#musiciansofInstagram’ to index your post among the community on international musicians.

Let’s go a step further and assume that you’re a musician in New York.

You could also use a hashtag like ‘#musiciansofny’ to index your post on that page.

The other way brands can use this is by developing their own hashtag.

6. Event hashtags

These are hashtags created for events and conferences organized around the world.

7. Day-based hashtags

There is a list of hashtags that are based on days of the week.

Even though most people reject these hashtags, one look at their popularity may nudge you to think otherwise.

8. Month-based hashtags

After day-based hashtags, we have month-based hashtags.

Although each variant can only be used once in a batch of 30 days in a year, it’s still beneficial.

9. Special day hashtags

These hashtags are based on a special day in a year.

Another way to categorize Instagram hashtags

Apart from the above-mentioned way of categorization, here’s one more way to categorize Instagram hashtags.

While that looks at the function and internal meaning of a hashtag, here’s how you can do it differently.

1. High competition Instagram hashtags

Instagram hashtags that have more than 250,000 posts fall into the category of high-competition Instagram hashtags.

These are generic hashtags like #digitalmarketing, #marketing, and #sales.

Here’s an example page of a high competition Instagram hashtag:

This page has more than 15,549,561 posts, which puts it at the top of the competition.

2. Medium-competition Instagram hashtags

Medium competition hashtags are in the range of 85,000 to 250,000 posts.

#digitalmarketingtip is a good example of a medium-competition Instagram hashtag.

3. Low-competition Instagram hashtags

7 Instagram hashtag mistakes you should avoid

Mistake #1: Keeping your profile private

A private profile is one of the worst things you can do for your hashtag strategy.

If your profile is private, Instagram won’t index your posts on any hashtag pages.

Let’s assume that you have included the following hashtags on your post: #marketing, #sales, #future.

Instagram will only index your posts on the following hashtag pages if your profile is public.

Here’s an example of a public profile.

With a public profile, you can view all it’s contents even if you aren’t following it.

Now, here’s an example of a private profile:

Even if this account uses 100 different hashtags on all their posts, it wouldn’t be indexed on the hashtag pages.

Mistake #2: Using banned hashtags on Instagram

Instagram has a number of banned hashtags you should stay away from.

These hashtags are banned because Instagram users have termed them to be spammy or irrelevant.

One rule of thumb is to insert your hashtag into the “Instagram search bar” and see if it has been flagged.

For example, you might think that ‘#alone’ is completely harmless.

But once you run a search on Instagram, you will find that this hashtag has been flagged for inappropriate use.

Adding too many banned hashtags on your profile , may flag your profile as spammy.

Mistake #3: Being too generic with your hashtag approach

Hashtags like #digitalmarketing, #sales, and #marketing are QUITE generic.

The most common (and ANNOYING) mistake on all social media platforms?

Spamming.

Instagram gives you the freedom to add 30 hashtags on every post.

But if you’re unable to come up with 30 hashtags, you shouldn’t add irrelevant hashtags.

Many social media marketers recommend not using more than 11 hashtags per post — to avoid appearing spammy.

Don’t add more hashtags and reduce your post relevancy.
