You Pooped Your Pants During A Run, Now What?

If you’ve been a runner for a while, there’s a good chance that, at one point or another, you’ve had to take an emergency pit stop to poop while on a long run. If you were lucky, there was a bathroom nearby. If you weren’t… well, let’s never speak about that again.

Runner’s trots (also called runner’s gut or runner’s stomach) is the euphemism strong urge to use the bathroom during or after a run, which can also be accompanied by abdominal cramping, nausea, and diarrhea. Although this can be uncomfortable and embarrassing, it’s also a normal part of being a runner.

If you are ever in doubt that your condition is severe, it’s best to get checked out by your doctor—but if you experience only the occasional episode of the runner’s trots, there are some ways to reduce the chances that it will happen again.

“Runner’s trots” is a common condition 

In a study of distance runners, 62 percent reported needing to stop during a run to have a bowel movement (12% during an actual race), and almost half reported getting nervous diarrhea before a race. Keep in mind that this is self-reported data, which means some respondents may have a case of runner’s high-induced amnesia, while others may have been too embarrassed to disclose.

An episode of runner’s trots is a distinctly uncomfortable experience that combines the physical stresses of distance running, the agony of an upset digestive system, and the paralyzing fear of what will happen if you can’t get to a toilet in time.

When this happens, a runner may only have a few minutes in which to get to the bathroom before they will shit their pants. This can happen to the best of us, with higher rates of the condition observed in younger runners, women, as well as people who regularly run long distances.

What causes runner’s trots?  

In a 2014 review of GI complaints during exercise, the authors identified three main causes for this unfortunate malady—physiological, mechanical, and nutritional.

Physiological  

During a run, a lot of the blood that would normally go to your gastrointestinal system is going to your muscles instead. Your GI system needs a lot of oxygenated blood to function properly; during a run, your muscles need it even more. The reduction in blood flow to your GI tract leads to reduced absorption of water, as well as a slowing down of its regular activity, all of which can lead to digestive issues.

Being dehydrated can make the problem even worse, leading to an increase in the probability of experiencing symptoms during or after a run.

Mechanical  

Running is a high-impact activity. What that means is that when you go for a run, whatever is moving through your GI tract is jostling around, which can disrupt everything going on in there. For your lower GI tract, this can lead to symptoms such as flatulence, diarrhea, as well as the increased urge to poop.

This jostling around can also cause some damage to the lining of your intestinal tract, which can lead to the very fun symptom of rectal bleeding after a long run. (Runner’s high is one hell of a drug!)

Nutritional 

What we eat can have a big impact on whether or not it’ll come out in the middle of a run. According to the 2014 review of GI complaints during exercise, the foods that cause the most issues are ones that are high in fiber, fat, protein and fructose, all of which have been associated with a high risk of GI issues. Dehydration is also a big culprit, while there’s some mixed evidence that suggests high-sugar beverages might also cause issues.

For some people, caffeine can cause issues, while sugar alcohols, such as the artificial sweeteners that are found in a large number of processed foods, can also cause problems during your run. If you are particularly sensitive to caffeine, try and limit your intake before a run, while also make it a habit to check the ingredients list of any processed foods such as protein bars or shakes for the presence of sugar alcohols in the place of sugar, which could cause particular problems.

Generally speaking, it’s best to avoid foods that are high in fat, fiber, and protein just before your run. Instead, opt for some easily digestible carbohydrates, such as a banana. During your run, it’s a good idea to eat or drink in small amounts if you can. You’ll also want to avoid eating any new foods before or during a long run or race, as you don’t know how your body might react.

If you find yourself dealing with GI issues on a regular basis, in addition to seeing your doctor, it can also help to keep a food diary, as we all react to foods differently.

How to prevent runner’s trots 

All of this information is good to know, but you really want one question answeredL How do I avoid ever shitting my pants during a run? Although you can’t fully prevent a case of the runner’s trots, you can cut down on the likelihood of it happening again by following these guidelines:

• Stay properly hydrated
• Avoid foods that are high in fat, fiber or protein just before running, stick to easily digestible carbohydrates instead
• Avoid too much caffeine or sugar alcohols before running
• Keep a food diary to identify trigger foods
• When in doubt, go to your doctor to get it checked out

The silver lining is that running is an effective way to ease constipation. Just make sure you are always close to a bathroom.

TweetDeck could soon look much more like Twitter’s web app

TweetDeck is a secret weapon for Twitter power users. The column layout allows them to keep tabs on tweets from a large number of accounts at once, using Twitter’s handy lists. That could be about to change, based on an image Twitter shared of the “new and improved TweetDeck” that it’s testing. At first glance, it looks a lot like the standard Twitter web app.

The company is testing the revamped TweetDeck with a few users in the US, Canada and Australia. Twitter product head Kayvon Beykpour said the updated TweetDeck includes “a full tweet composer, new advanced search features, new column types, and a new way to group columns into clean workspaces.” A menu on the left lists a number of “decks” centered around things like food, entertainment and news, as well as a “primary” deck.

Any big changes to TweetDeck will surely be met with skepticism from heavy users. Many of those who use the app do so as part of their jobs, and significant updates that disrupt people’s workflow might not sit too well with them.

Still, it’s worth remembering that this is a test and things might change before the updated TweetDeck rolls out more broadly. “Through these tests, we’re exploring how we can give people more customization and control using TweetDeck,” Beykpour wrote in a tweet.

Rumors have been floating around for a while that TweetDeck might become part of Twitter Blue, the company’s subscription service. Beykpour added a little fuel to that fire when discussing the app’s overhaul. “We’ll take these lessons into account as we explore what TweetDeck could look like within Twitter’s subscription offerings later on. We’ll have more to share soon as we learn from these tests,” he wrote.

Traeger buys wireless thermometer company Meater

Smart grill maker Traeger has bought wireless meat thermometer company Meater, which it says marks the next step in creating the “ultimate connected grilling experience.” Traeger allows users to monitor and control connected grills through a smartphone or Apple Watch. Bringing Meater on board will help people to get an accurate temperature reading for their food from just about anywhere, Traeger said.

Meater makes several Bluetooth and WiFi-enabled thermometers, while Traeger currently only sells wired thermometers. Traeger said the acquisition will enable it to “accelerate entry into the adjacent accessories market with a highly complementary technology-enabled product.” It’s unclear whether Traeger plans to bundle Meater products with its grills or sell them separately — Meater will continue to run as a standalone company. Still, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Traeger integrate Meater readings into its own apps for a more seamless outdoor cooking experience.

These are the top 10 apps that rule my phone — and my life

Apps are essential to the smartphone experience, and if you don’t believe me, just ask Microsoft. Unfortunately, while there are millions of Android apps on Google Play, Amazon’s App Store, F-Droid, and other stores, you can only install and use so many on your Android phone in a day. As a result, we tend to focus on the best Android apps, but best overall doesn’t necessarily mean best for you.

Case in point, while Gmail is a good email service, I personally hate the way it handles notifications and mail categorization. Google Wallpapers is a decent app, but for me, it doesn’t hold a candle to Tapet or KLWP. With this in mind, I dug into my usage habits to see which apps are my most-used, most essential apps, and while not everything on my list is mainstream, they’re the top 10 apps that I use each and every day, maybe a little too much in the case of our first three entries.

Disney Emoji Blitz: Match three-ing away all my stress

I’m not proud of it, but this is my hands-down 100% most-used app on every phone I’ve owned since the game launched. I’ve been playing it for five years now, I’m finally on Level 500, and I have 321 emoji out of 369, and I see no reason to slow down now. Yes, I know, this little match-three game will never take the crown in best Android games, but it’s cute, rounds are quick, and I can slip it into mini-breaks or play it during meetings where I can’t trust myself to read anything or else I’ll tune out the discussion.

As the Emoji in the name implies, you win character and item emojis through the game and can then use them as stickers throughout Android. Of course, the emoji keyboard DEB uses is outdated garbage, and there’s no search, so you better remember exactly where that Trident emoji is hiding, but at least they are usable, and they’re fun.

What really draws me back into the game month after month, time after time, is the strategizing around how to best play the events that take place over 2-5 days apiece. For instance, on Clear and Villain events, you essentially nerf yourself through the main event to make the extra-credit “Rainbow Falls” easier for scoring exclusive emoji. Meanwhile, item card events you want to speed through fast as possible so that you can try to replay them for extra loot. Then there’s figuring out which emojis work best for certain missions or against certain villains, and it’s like a giant Disney puzzle with cute emojis.

Match three magic

If you’re gonna spend time in a match-three game, it might as well give you something usable at the end. Disney Emoji Blitz lets you unlock hundreds of Disney character emojis and thousands of Disney item emojis, all of which can be used as stickers in other apps.

Twitter: Staying connected and completely distracted

Like many in my profession, Twitter is part job requirement and part personal addiction. We scope out leaks, bugs, and service outages through Twitter, as well as reaching out to sources, taking the temperature of current rumors, and finding feedback on changes big and small throughout Android.

I also use it to scope out which Walt Disney World parks are the most crowded, which anime had new episodes today — My Life as a Villainess is back, woohoo — and play crowdsourced Tetris. (Come play with us, I need more people who play the long game rather than just stacking everything and waiting for a straight piece.)

In any event, Twitter is an app I couldn’t quit if I tried. If Twitter ever decides to be sensible and have Twitter Blue eliminate ads and give me an edit button — even for just the first five minutes after a tweet — I’d subscribe in a heartbeat. I used to rock third-party Twitter apps like Talon and Fenix, but I’ve left those to more persnickety users ever since the APIs were limited.

Reddit: Research and rabbit holes to fall down

Speaking of glorious, glorious bread, the sub that turned me from Reddit lurker to actually having an account is r/Breadit. Milk rolls, burger buns, bahn mi, sweet butter rolls, nothing spurs my appetite and desire to kill an afternoon baking like (b)reddit.

Again, this is a place I can lose hours at a time, even if I came in with a legitimate work-related question like “are there really not more Google TV-friendly hubs?” or “who’s having issues after that latest update,” and somehow fall down a rabbit hole answering other people’s Chromebook questions and commenting on the latest r/MarvelStudios fan theories about [REDACTED].

It’s glorious and so useful, but Reddit is also full of so much utter crap, too. It’s why your subreddit list needs to be carefully curated like a goddamn museum collection, or you just have to accept that you will get lost in places like DogsWithJobs and OldSchoolCool and emerge hours later, disoriented from an awww overdose.

Reddit earned its nickname as the “front page of the internet,” and while so much of Reddit is a black hole from which nothing escapes — at least, nothing good — there are also tens of thousands of communities where you can find ideas, debate, and memes.

Google Keep: Where I do most of my writing

Amazingly enough, I do not do that much writing in Google Docs these days unless I’m working on a review or a best guide with unholy amounts of formatting. After all, the Google Docs app isn’t the friendliest in the world when working on your phone, and Google Docs’ website lacks a dark theme. Google Keep, however, has both and then some.

I wrote weeks ago that Google Keep is the best Google app you’ve never heard of, and it’s even more useful once you realize that it doesn’t count towards your Google One storage limit as Google Docs do.

Keep has a done of little tips and features that help supercharge my workflow while also letting me branch off into to-do lists for the week or personal creative plot bunnies that need out of my head before I can write again.

Whether I’m roughing out a massive project or just jotting down where I parked, Google Keep is always there for me. It’s totally free, totally fun, and fully featured with half a dozen note types, time and location reminders, and so much more.

YouTube Music: If you see me without headphones, RUN

I wake up in the morning to YouTube Music on my Google Assistant speakers. I spend my work time listening to mixes and playlists of every flavor and funk. When I’m bored, cooking, or cleaning, YouTube Music is my constant companion and mood enhancer, so it’s hard to underestimate how much I use this service.

YouTube Music has come a long way since it relaunched in 2018 — heck, it’s even come a long way just in the last 18 months — and while there’s still much to be accomplished, the app is pretty consistent these days. For example, the new Replay Mix is great for just giving me the bops and earworms that have been stuck in my head all month, and Your Mixtape continues to nail my tastes like a ball-peen hammer. In addition, downloads aren’t glitchy as hell anymore, official label availability continues to improve, and gapless playback is consistent.

Yes, Spotify still takes the crown as the best subscription music streamer and best Android music player. So yes, YouTube Music is still playing catch-up on music quality with Apple Music, Amazon Music, and Deezer.

But my library, my personal uploads, and my listening habits are all on YouTube Music, and I love to listen to it on road trips because Google Assistant lets me fast forward exactly to that drum solo that’s stuck in my head.

Whether I need to amp myself up, calm myself down, or just the awkward silence with my parents, YouTube Music is ready with all my jams and new recommendations every day.

WEBTOON: Nightly escapes and weekend binges

I’ve always been a manga fan, and WEBTOON scratches that itch with tons of great webcomics from around the world. I now subscribe to a dozen series that bring me a nice little hit of serotonin after work is done. Lore Olympus keeps making me swoon with the way both healthy and unhealthy relationships are explored, The Witch and the Bull always has me on the edge of my seat, and The Strongest Florist is just too hilarious or words with its unique twists on MMO and Fantasy tropes.

The best part is that you can enjoy all these stories for free — minus one little square ad at the bottom of each chapter. If you get tired of waiting for that big event a few chapters ahead, you can Fast Pass it in order to support the author and the Webtoon platform. I have four series I’m Fast Passing every week, but if I find a new story, I usually end up Fast Passing to the latest chapter to get a good feel for if I want to stick it out or not.

Smart Launcher: App management and theming, all in one

As I mentioned at the top of this article, I have about 200 apps installed on my phone. Going through them all in any alphabetized drawer is a big, fat pain — even with the Quickbar in Action Launcher or Niagara Launcher. Thankfully, I don’t have to scroll through a giant list anymore.

First things first, rather than swipe-based shortcuts from your app icons that can interfere with the general launcher shortcuts and system gestures at times, Smart Launcher uses double-tap shortcuts instead. For instance, if I double-tap Google Keep, I bring up Google Photos instead. Likewise, I can double-tap the folder to launch Slack or single-tap it to bring up my Work & Weather folder. It allows me to double the functionality of my home screen without having to keep swipe gestures from conflicting.

The app drawer automatically adds new apps to the category it thinks is best, and I can create new tabs at will for new or combined categories that better arrange my apps. Ten tabs in my current drawer is probably overkill, but a couple are holdovers from my app collection days when I’d be testing tons of weather, keyboard, and theming apps.

Everyone has their own particular way of arranging their app drawer and home screen, but Smart Launcher allows me to get everything to max productivity, even my theming. Smart Launcher ties in with Icon Pack Studio so that my icon packs can automatically update to color-match my new wallpaper or custom theme. Whether it’s opening articles to read on the go, seeking out new recipes to try while I’m home with access to a real kitchen, or just googling an unknown brand to check its quality, Google Chrome is always there, with synced history and all my saved passwords.

Google Chrome is Chrome no matter where you use it, so using it on my phone integrates better with my workflow on my Chromebooks, my Chrome tablets, and even on Windows laptops.

Google Meet: Meetings, more meetings, and happy hours

We have at least one meeting a day, and while I should, technically, theoretically always use my Chromebook so that I can use my USB mic for the best audio quality, sometimes you just want to take a meeting on your phone. Hey, when meetings can run an hour or longer, it’s nice to have the convenience of moving from the office to the kitchen and making lunch while you listen.

This goes double for virtual happy hours and going-away parties — there’s been too many of those lately — because as parties go into a second hour or a third, being on your phone lets you get up to stretch, replenish your snacks, and maybe start measuring out ingredients for milk bread. Google Meet even has a rather capable picture-in-picture mode, so you can keep using your phone for playing down Emoji Blitz lives checking sources during a discussion on the finer points of international technological supply chains.

While Meet is going back to the one-hour limit for non-enterprise users, it’s still an excellent app, and I wish that Duo would take a few cues from it when it comes to recurring calls and weekly happy hours.

Meetings and hangouts

Whether I’m in a super-serious meeting with my bosses or a happy hour with my coworkers, Google Meet is there for me on the phone whenever I don’t want to be tied to a desk for potentially two or three hours.

Slack: Because the workday never really ends anymore

I love my job, and I love my coworkers, which is why every day starts not with email or Twitter but with Slack to see what I missed during my escape to dreamland. Slack has a very passionate team of developers constantly adding features and refining what’s already there. That dedication and stability make me praise my corporate overlords that they let us keep Slack instead of using Microsoft Teams — or, god forbid, Google Chat. (Look, Google Chat is a good Hangouts replacement, but holy crap, this is not a good app for corporate communication.)

Slackmojis are a special point of pride for Slack and for our teams, which have hundreds of in-jokes, party animals (including a PartyBader), and 19 different Baby Yoda emojis alone. These reactions make it a joy to respond to team-wide messages and help foster a sense of camaraderie and playfulness when we discuss the latest news and upcoming device rumors.

Whether I’m half-asleep rolling out of bed or at my desk alert and productive — or working from Walt Disney World — Slack keeps me plugged in and able to answer questions in seconds, whether I’m supposed to be online, or it’s a day off.

What apps do you use most?

I understand that most of you probably wouldn’t touch half this list with a 10-foot pole — WEBTOON has a very particular audience, and YouTube Music is a pariah to most — but I love my apps. They keep me peppy, productive, and personable. While there are plenty of alternatives available, which I try from time to time, these are the services I always come back to, even when my battery’s at 13% and begging for a charger.

With 3D printed steaks, Spanish startup eyes the mass market – Reuters

BARCELONA, June 29 (Reuters) – As demand for plant-based alternatives to meat rises, Barcelona-based startup Novameat is using its 3D printing technology to manufacture vegetarian “steaks” that it hopes will reach the mass market next year.

Novameat plans to sell its “steaks” directly to consumers and to businesses such as restaurants interested in producing plant-based meat, business development manager Alexandre Campos told Reuters on Tuesday.

The Spanish company, which developed its technology in 2018, was showing how its latest 3D printer produced food at Barcelona’s Mobile World Congress (MWC).

“It didn’t have the feeling of a traditional steak but I was positively surprised because I did not expect that the texture would be so well achieved,” said Ferran Gregori, after trying one of the “steaks” printed at Novameat’s stand at the world’s largest telecoms gathering.

The company uses 3D technology to test recipes, introducing ingredients through capsules because it is a cheaper process than mass-producing, Campos said.

Once a model is considered successful, it could then be produced on a larger scale in bigger machines not using 3D technology, manufacturing up to 500 kg of fake meat per hour, he added.

Campos said the startup’s aim had been to recreate the muscle fibres of animal meat but using 100% plant-based ingredients. He forecast the plant-based industry would keep growing at double-digit rates in the foreseeable future.

The company also said it was producing the fake meat for environmental reasons.

“(We seek to) replace animal meat for something that is better for the planet, ourselves and animals,” Campos said.

LONDON, July 2 (Reuters) – A trove of love letters that explore American poet Sylvia Plath’s passion for her British husband, fellow poet Ted Hughes, are up for auction at Sotheby’s, along with their wedding rings, family recipes and photo albums.

Plath, whose haunting poems turned the demons of her trauma into some of the most unsettling verses of modern English, killed herself in 1963 aged 30 by putting her head in a gas oven. Her young children were asleep in the flat but she had sealed their room against the gas. They were unharmed.

Plath and Hughes married in 1956 and their relationship was as tumultuous as it was passionate. Her letters to Hughes explore her agony of separation from him while she was studying at Cambridge.

“My flesh is colder than wet sod,” Plath wrote. “Do you know that you have the most delicious quirked lovely mouth and your eyes crink up and you are all warm and smooth and elegantly muscled and long-striding and my god I go mad when I let myself think of you.”

“Darling, you’re the wildest loveliest piece of flesh walking. If little girls scream, it is only in a king of Bacchic ecstasy; the police are just jealous and want to convict such exceptional Samsonian excellence. I love you so.”

The letters will be sold at Sotheby’s on July 9-21. The sale comprises 55 lots and comes directly from the collection of Sylvia’s daughter, Frieda Hughes.

Netflix is inviting you to cook with Paris Hilton

Neither party, however, are under the delusion that the forthcoming show, “Cooking with Paris,” will showcase gourmet grub. In fact, they’re seemingly counting on it being a little bit of a can’t-look-away disaster — not unlike her viral cooking video from January 2020.

Described by Netflix as “the traditional cooking show upside down,” “Cooking with Paris” will have the heiress showing off her “very newly domesticated side and welcoming us into her kitchen while she learns to sauté, sear and zest.”

“She’s not a trained chef and she’s not trying to be,” a press release says. “With the help of her celebrity friends, she navigates new ingredients, new recipes and exotic kitchen appliances. Inspired by her viral YouTube video, Paris will take us from the grocery store to the finished table spread – and she might actually learn her way around the kitchen.”

The six-episode first season premieres August 4.

Amazons Echo Show 8 (2nd gen) is the smart display your home needs

The Echo Show 8 (2nd generation) is a sleek, smart addition to the Echo lineup, boasting an 8-inch HD touchscreen, a super responsive auto-panning and zooming camera to keep you in focus during video calls, dual stereo speakers, and the ever-adaptive Alexa.

As a central hub for your home, it really can’t be beaten, but it needs a little more work to be a good fit for the work-from-home crowd.

Large and in charge

If you’re familiar with the 1st gen Echo Show 8, you know it’s not exactly a compact device — and the 2nd gen Echo Show 8 is the same size, measuring in with an 8-inch screen and a 4-inch by 8-inch footprint. That could be a pro or a con, depending on what you’re looking to get from the device (and where you want to put it).

I love the size for my kitchen because it’s nice to have a large screen there for recipes, and it’s a gathering area for the family where we can easily make video calls. On the other hand, it would be way too big for my desk.

If you plan to use your Echo Show for streaming, you’re going to want to spring for the bigger Echo Show 8 rather than the Echo Show 5 (which also just received a revamp).

And because this device was essentially made for video calls and connecting, you want to put it somewhere where the household would naturally gather anyway. There are plenty of places that I could put it, but they’re not areas where we typically congregate.

Zoom… maybe

Because of the kind of work I do (writing), I attend lots of online cooking classes and workshops. And one of my little pet peeves is having to move my laptop into the kitchen for these meetings so my phone’s not tied up.

So one of the features of the Echo Show 8 that I’m most excited about is that it supposedly works with Zoom with essentially no setup required. I was super pumped to test out the feature with a cooking class. After a quick Google search, it was easy enough to get everything in place. I synced my Google calendar to Alexa, waited for the meeting time, and said the magic words: “Alexa, join my Zoom meeting.”

And… she said there was no dial-in number so it was a no-go. I even generated some meetings of my own to try to test out the feature but none of them had a dial-in number either, so they all received the same message.

I had that beautiful Echo Show set up all nice in my kitchen but still had to move my laptop into the kitchen for my class. Womp, womp.

On the other hand, I like that the Echo Show 8 gives me helpful calendar reminders without intrusive notifications so I can easily see when my next meeting is.

One of the new features of these 2nd gen devices is motion-activated Alexa routines — which could really be a game-changer for setting home office hours. Imagine a low-key instrumental playlist starting when you walk into your office while Alexa automatically starts reading your calendar. Nice.

Note: from my understanding, the Echo Show 8 is the ONLY Echo Show device that can join Zoom meetings. So if that’s something that’s important to you, this is the one you want. I am anxiously awaiting a fix for the “dial-in” issue because it would make the Echo Show 8 a nearly perfect device in my eyes.

Hands-free kitchen assistant

I subscribe to a meal kit delivery service that shares their recipe cards digitally. On that note, I created a routine to automatically open the browser so I can navigate to the meal kit website when I say, “Alexa, let’s make dinner.” It was nice to have Alexa set timers when I pop something in the oven, rather than setting it manually on the oven.

And when I just need to pull up a recipe, it’s so much easier to use the Echo Show 8 than to constantly check my phone or run back and forth to my laptop. Maybe it’s because I spend so much time in the kitchen between work and feeding my crew, but I really feel like it’s where the Echo Show 8 shines. The smaller Echo Show 5 is nice, but it definitely wouldn’t be near as useful for looking at recipes due to its compact screen.

Still, it’s way more than just a high-tech cookbook stand.

Easy, flawless video calling

If you’re all about video calling, this is absolutely the Echo Show device you want. The camera is a significant upgrade from the 1st gen Echo Show 8, jumping from 1 megapixel to 13.

During calls, the camera will pan and zoom automatically to stay focused on the people who are in the camera’s view — and that’s a huge plus for parents of squirmy kids and people who’d like to multitask on a video call instead of holding their phone in front of their face.

It’s also so very easy to video chat with other Alexa devices in your household — just say, “Alexa, drop in on [so and so].” You can also use your Show as an intercom to relay messages to all the other Alexa devices in the house. It’s the dinner bell of the future.

Simple home security

With Alexa Guard mode, the device can interface with your existing security system, detect alarms and glass breaks, and automatically turn smart lights on and off. The Echo Show 8 (and other Echo Show devices, too) can also serve as security cameras.

Even if you’re out of the house, all you need is a WiFi connection to check in on the house using the Alexa app and the Echo Show’s camera.

For security features, Amazon allows you to delete your voice recordings and switch off the camera shutter when you don’t want it in use. You can read more about steps they take to protect your privacy here.

The new Echo Show 8 is made for connecting with people both inside and outside your home. The camera has had a huge glow-up and now boasts 13 megapixels (compared to the 1st gen’s 1 MP), and the Echo Show 8 offers more Alexa functionality than ever.

I ran into some issues getting Zoom to work on the Echo Show 8, which was one of the main draws of the device, but other than that I’m truly impressed.
