Lollipop AI launches online grocery marketplace where you can build your own recipes

As I’ve taken to online grocery shopping over the pandemic, I’ve always wondered why supermarkets didn’t offer simple ‘recipe’ features that would have automatically collected items for a homemade meal. It seemed an opportunity missed. But it is missed no more.

Lollipop AI, the new British online grocery marketplace, is launching its public beta today to do that, and it’s been created by a serial UK entrepreneur who was there at the start of successful UK startups Osper, Monzo and Curve.

Founder and CEO Tom Foster-Carter has envisaged a platform allowing people to build meal plans from recipes, assembling the ingredients automatically into their shopping baskets, and suggesting remaining household essentials. He says the Lollipop could well help with health goals, improve culinary skills and minimize food waste. Built as a marketplace, it will be partnering with Sainsbury’s and BBC Good Food with more partners, and fulfillment will be completed by retail partners. The business model will be taking a small commission from retail partners, allowing selected advertising, e.g. from CPG brand owners.

The site will be free to use, while a premium tier is planned. The first 10K beta testers to sign up to the waitlist will be offered access to premium features “for life,” says the startup, which will offer prices at the same rate as normal supermarkets.

Foster-Carter, who had the idea after having a baby and realizing he was spending hours trying to use a normal supermarket, says the approach will save several hours a week for the average household. Lollipop claims 80% of households spend over an hour a week meal-planning and online grocery shopping.

The founding team includes former employees of Monzo, Farmdrop, Amazon, Sainsbury’s and HelloFresh, such as cofounders Chris Parsons and Ib Warnerbring.

Although Foster-Carter is coy about how much he has raised for this approach, he says he has raised a pre-seed round backed by JamJar Investments, Speedinvest, and a “raft of grocery/technology big hitters” including Ian Marsh (former UK GM of HelloFresh) and former leadership and founders of online grocers in the U.K. and abroad plus ‘super angels’ Charles Songhurst and Ed Lando.

In particular, the site is likely to appeal to people looking to lose weight, as meal planning would be simpler and may even have an impact on recipe-box startups.

Lollipop is not alone in its ambitions. Jupiter.co in the U.S. bills itself as “groceries on autopilot”; Jow is recipe-led shopping, as is Side Chef; while Cooklist is a meal-planner + cooking support, also in the U.S.

Foster-Carter told me: “It’s a marketplace so we could partner with traditional supermarkets (Sainbury’s, Tescos, Waitrose etc) + online retailers (Ocado, Amazon), direct to farm / organic (Riverford, Farmdrop), mission-led single component (Oddbox, Milk & More, etc); recipe boxes (Gousto, Hello Fresh, Mindful Chef etc); and rapid delivery (Gorillas, Getir, Weezy, etc).

“This is just the start… The plan is to be the single place you go to for all your food needs – we’ll enable you to order your Deliveroo or restaurant kit (e.g. Dishpatch) from us. Groceries are delivered by our partners, and then when it’s time to cook you’ll be able to use a cooking companion app (due out next month). In the future you’ll be able to improve your cooking skills through Lollipop.”

Ice cream is, bar none, the best dessert out there. It’s rich, creamy, cold, and comes in as many flavors as you can imagine, from your standard chocolate and vanilla to experimental offerings such as ghost pepper or corn on the cob. Some days, it’s enough to open a pint from the nearest grocery store, but making your own feels satisfying in a way that store-bought just can’t provide.

Most ice cream recipes require an ice cream maker. If you don’t have one—and let’s face it, that’s a piece of specialized equipment that will just take up extra room in your kitchen, while also costing money—then no-churn ice cream recipes are a good option for when you get the occasional craving to make your own.

Over the years, I’ve found a couple recipes that are quick, easy, and provide a taste I can’t find in the store. Both of my standards are citrus-based. As it turns out, the acid in the citrus thickens the cream, which cuts down on the need for whipping and churning. The sugar balances out the tartness, while also keeping the ice cream from freezing too hard.

No-churn lemon (or lime) ice cream 

This recipe for no-churn lemon ice cream comes from novelist, peach farmer, and food writer Dori Sanders, and satisfies all of my requirements for a recipe: It’s quick, easy, and results in an ice cream that is far superior to anything I can buy. In this case, the result is an intensely tart, lemony flavor that I’ve yet to find in the store-bought versions. I’ve also made it using limes, which works just as well.

To make the ice cream, all you do is whisk together one cup sugar, the juice and zest of two lemons or limes, and a pinch of salt. Once this turns into a thick paste, whisk in one cup of heavy cream and one cup of whole milk. Whisk all that together, pour the mixture into a metal pan, cover it with aluminum foil, and put in the freezer.

According to the recipe, you’ll need to stir the mixture after about two to three hours of freezing, after which you let it freeze a little more. Personally, I’ve found that if you pour the mixture so that it’s only about one-inch thick, you can skip the stirring step. Sometimes, it helps to be lazy.

One note: I’ve made this recipe a hundred times and I’ve never, not once, made the candied sesame seeds that Sanders suggests making to put on top of the ice cream. If you do make them, please report back to me.

Lemonade soft-serve ice cream 

This recipe for lemonade soft serve ice cream, which calls for lemonade concentrate, powdered sugar, and heavy cream, feels like a throwback to my childhood, when I just couldn’t choose between the pink lemonade we made out of a can or soft serve ice cream. This recipe combines both of them, for a frozen treat that is soft and tangy.

The recipe calls for one. cup heavy cream, six ounces of thawed frozen lemonade concentrate, and ¼ cup powdered sugar. Where I’m at, I can only find frozen lemonade concentrate in 12-ounce cans, so I just double the recipe. To make it, you whip the cream in a chilled bowl until soft peaks form. Then, you stir in the lemonade concentrate and powdered sugar, after which you put the mixture in a freezer-safe container, cover it, and freeze until solid.

Every time I make this, my toddler inhales it, then demands more. I guess he won’t have choose between pink lemonade or soft serve ice cream after all. Instead, he gets the best of both.

7 ‘Healthy’ TikTok Recipes That Nutritionists Hate

As a 32-year-old journalist with a master’s degree in nutrition, it’s pretty clear to me that at least 90% of the nutrition advice on TikTok is total garbage. It’s rife with young, thin influencers showcasing their (typically low-calorie) daily meals in an attempt to “inspire” others to eat like they do.

HuffPost and many other outlets have reported on why these types of videos can be bad for mental health and triggering for those with eating disorders. Yet, this kind of terrible “healthy eating” inspiration is as popular as ever.

You only have to do a quick search of the #healthyrecipes tag to see that TikTok is littered with not-so-healthy ideas. We asked two registered dietitians, both of whom use TikTok, to weigh in on some of these “healthy” recipes.

1. Cucumber dipped in stevia, instead of watermelon

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend that most adults eat at least two servings of fruit per day, and they repeatedly call out fruit as a key component in a healthy diet. Unfortunately, TikTok might have you believe otherwise. Recently, keto TikToker Janelle Rohner recommended replacing watermelon with cucumber slices dipped in the sugar substitute stevia, which apparently taste the same.

“This is some next-level TikTok sorcery, where audiences have been led to believe that replacing a nourishing fruit like watermelon with a vegetable (quite the lateral move) and dipping it into a sweetener is somehow beneficial,” said Cara Harbstreet, a dietitian who owns Street Smart Nutrition. “This is driven by a cultural fear of carbs and foods that contain them, including fruit, despite known nutritional benefit to eating these foods.”

Watermelon is packed with nutrients, and there’s no reason not to eat it. If you’re craving fruit, just eat the fruit!

2. Weight loss detox drinks

There’s nothing wrong with juice. But blending up pineapple, cucumber, lemon, ginger and water and calling it a “detox” drink that leads to weight loss? That’s wildly inaccurate and harmful.

“When influencers (with NO medical background) create videos saying something is ‘healthy,’ not only are they not factual but they are usually harmful,” said Sam Previte, a dietitian and the owner of Find Food Freedom.

There’s nothing inherently detoxifying about this drink — because “detoxes” and “cleanses” don’t actually work. Plus, if you’re drinking this for breakfast, you’re missing out on fat and protein, two important macronutrients.

3. Low-carb Cool Whip ice cream

“Ice cream is ice cream, plain and simple,” Harbstreet said, pointing out that there’s even a United States Department of Agriculture definition for what counts as ice cream and what doesn’t. The TikTok suggestion to mix Sugar-Free Cool Whip with a package of Jell-O Instant Pudding and freeze it into ice cream likely doesn’t qualify.

“While this could be a snack that satisfies a craving for sweet flavor and creamy texture, positioning it as a replacement for genuine ice cream suggests that ice cream should only be consumed if it meets a low-calorie, low-fat, low-sugar standard,” Harbstreet said.

In other words, this is just another low-calorie ice cream substitute that demonizes real ice cream, which is far more satisfying.

4. Cucumber ‘everything bagel’

Simply scoop out the seeds of the cucumber, TikTok says, and fill the cuke with some cream cheese topped with everything bagel seasoning. Voila! A low-carb bagel!

Except, of course, a cucumber won’t satisfy your bagel craving.

“This speaks to both the cultural demonization of carbs as well as misunderstanding of what a nutritionally balanced, medically supervised ketogenic diet is,” Harbstreet said.

She’s referring to the fact that people with certain medical conditions might benefit from following a true ketogenic diet, but not by following the random #ketorecipe suggestions on TikTok.

“Framing a vegetable as a replacement for something like a bagel drives a lot of fear around eating carbs or having ‘too much’ bread,” Harbstreet said.

5. Stale cheese ‘keto’ popcorn

One popular TikTok video explains that leaving cheese cubes out at room temperature for at least 48 hours until they’re stale, then baking them until they’re crispy and plump, makes them taste like popcorn. The question is: Why would you do that?

This “speaks to volumes of people who struggle with disordered eating,” Previte said. “Sixty-five percent of women ages 25-45 struggle with disordered eating and an additional 9% have clinically diagnosed eating disorders.”

It’s no wonder that the young, impressionable TikTok audience falls for food trends like this, since many are willing to go to great lengths to lose weight or be “healthy.” As evidenced by this list, there’s a lot of unnecessary fear of carbohydrates, and this crazy stale cheese trend is just another misinformed attempt at eating fewer carbs.

“As a registered dietitian and intuitive eating counselor, let me be explicitly clear that you do not have to eat stale cheese,” Previte said. “You can have popcorn whenever you want and still be healthy.”

6. Bell pepper sandwiches

Whole wheat bread has tons of nutrients, but TikTok suggests that you skip it and build your sandwich inside a bell pepper instead! Dietitians say that’s wildly unnecessary.

“There is nothing wrong with using bread for a sandwich,” Previte said. The brain needs a minimum of 130 grams of carbs per day to function properly, which she equates to about eight slices of bread.

“Of course you can get carb from other food sources, but carbs are not the enemy,” Previte said.

If you think a bell pepper “sandwich” sounds delicious? Go ahead and eat one! But there’s no need to avoid bread.

Harbstreet voiced another concern. “This trend is also edging into some subtle or overt elitism,” she said. A bell pepper, particularly an organic bell pepper like many TikTokers recommend, is considerably more expensive than two slices of bread.

7. Lettuce water as a sleep aid

There’s a new trend of ― no joke ― steeping whole lettuce leaves in your tea. Supposedly, it helps you sleep.

“There is no scientific evidence to suggest this sleep aid works in humans,” Harbstreet said.

The idea likely comes from the fact that certain molecules found in romaine lettuce have been shown to promote sleep in animal studies, but that’s hardly a reason to believe that putting a few leaves in your tea will have the same effect.

“Videos like this speak to the effort of TikTok influencers to gain clout by hopping on trends. You’ll notice many of the videos exaggerate the alleged outcomes by making claims that they ‘fell asleep and forgot to finish the video,’ suggesting it works better than claimed.”

The bottom line? Don’t mistake TikTok trends for legitimate nutrition advice.

“As a dietitian, I see many of these trends as the manifestation of our culture’s deeply disordered relationship with food and health,” Harbstreet said. “The majority of them exhibit orthorexic tendencies as best, with some major red flags for eating disorder behaviors at worst.” Essentially, they’re about eating less — fewer calories, fewer carbs, less sugar and sometimes just as little food as possible.

Plus, many of these trends take off not because the recipe itself looks good, but because the influencer in the video fits the false cultural idea of what “healthy” looks like — young, white, able-bodied and very thin.

“I have some growing concerns about what damage this is doing to our perception of not only what ‘healthy’ eating looks like, but also who we look to when we think of how to be ‘healthy,’” Harbstreet said.

If you’re hoping to improve your health, seek out expert guidance from a credentialed health professional. Don’t turn to TikTok.

  • Turkey mince- 400g pack 
  • Can kidney bean in water, rinsed and drained- 420g

  • Long-grain rice, rinsed- 100g 
  • Iceberg lettuce, shredded- ½ 
  • Chicken stock- 600ml 
  • Pot soured cream- 150ml 
  • Chopped- small bunch coriander
  • Taco shells- 8 
  • To serve- grated cheese and guacamole

Cooking Process: 

To make Turkey chilli & rice tacos- Very short term method:

Step 1

Heat the paste in a frying pan using a lid. Cook until mince and brown. Can use cut to break. Stir in the beans, rice mixture and add the stock.

Step 2

Boil the rice for 20-25 minutes and keep stirring in the sweet care before sprinkling the coriander. Heat the taco shells as directed by the pack. Take lettuce, minced meat, sour cream and serve nicely. Let everyone add guacamole and grated cheese to make their dinner.

  • zest lemons- 2

For the spiced flour

  • plain flour- 225g 
  • cornflour- 2 ½ tbsp 
  • garlic granules- 2 ¼ tsp 
  • salt- 2 ¼ tsp 
  • chilli powder- 2 ¼ tsp

Cooking Process:

Step 1

Take a large dish and collect the ingredients of the dry brine. Toss a good coat with the chicken and chill for about 12-24 hours. In a large bowl add the black pepper with the spicy ingredients. Mix eggs and buttermilk in another bowl with another bowl of milk. Dip the pieces to coat the chicken in such a way that it is completely coated. 

Step 2

On the other hand, cover the chicken with the spiced flour and place the baking tray on which the chicken is placed on the top of the wire rack. Get ready to do the frying. Keep the temperature of the thermometer at 180C and take the oil in a cast-iron frying pan or saucepan and drain after the chicken is fried, but place the wire jerk in the second tray.

Step 3

You can keep 3/4 pieces of chicken in 140 C fan / 180 C / level 3 while the gas is heated. Cook for about 10 minutes. Insert the thermometer into the flesh on the side of the bone and see if it has reached 63C or if it is suitable for cooking.

Peel a squash, grate it and squeeze the juice. Toss with sugar and vinegar to dissolve the sugar, then toss again with the coriander leaves. Divide the salad into 4 plates and take the rice to serve the burgers.
