“My blog is my soul,” says Jessica Hylton-Leckie, founder of Jessica in the Kitchen, a blog featuring hundreds of her easy, vegan comfort food recipes. Jessica puts her heart into every recipe she creates, sometimes taking months to get them just right before sharing them with the world. Along with easy-to-follow instructions, she shares snippets of her life and helpful cooking tips, and elevates every recipe with gorgeous, magazine-worthy photos.
Jessica has always been an entrepreneur. In 2010, while an undergraduate law student, she started a baking business and blog called Jessiker Bakes. At the time, the food blogging world wasn’t the crowded market it is now, but a smaller, tighter-knit community, especially in Jamaica, where Jessica was born and continues to call home today.
As times changed, Jessica changed with them. She stopped her baking business to concentrate on law school, but she kept her blog. When she transitioned to a plant-based diet in 2014, she evolved her site to share more savory, veg-friendly recipes, and renamed it Jessica in the Kitchen to better reflect its new focus. After getting her degree and becoming a practicing lawyer, she had a bout of debilitating, stress-induced health issues that forced her to face that blogging, not law, was her true calling.
“It was months of stress. Really bad, bed-ridden stress,” Jessica says. “It was my dad who was like, hey, I’ve seen that you love [blogging], I think you should try to give it a shot.” And so she quit her corporate law career in 2016 and took up Jessica in the Kitchen full-time.
Neil Patrick Harris and his husband, David Burtka, are selling their Harlem home, a refurbished 1908 brownstone that they filled with whimsical collectibles and furnishings, from a robot parrot to the bar booth on “How I Met Your Mother,” the TV sitcom where both actors had starred. There’s even a “secret” room hidden on the top floor.
The two are sad to be leaving the brownstone, at 2036 Fifth Avenue, between 125th and 126th Streets, but their primary residence now is in East Hampton. (They bought a 13.5-acre estate there four years ago.)
“The Harlem brownstone holds some of our dearest and fondest memories,” Mr. Harris said. “Our kids have spent the majority of their lives there. It’s a legitimately special place.”
Mr. Burtka felt much the same way about the house: “It will always have a soft spot in my heart.”
The asking price for the house is $7.325 million, with $19,712 in annual property taxes, according to Vickey Barron, a broker with Compass who is listing the brownstone with Pacey Barron, her colleague and daughter.
Mr. Harris and Mr. Burtka had bought the five-story, Italianate-style structure, near Marcus Garvey Park, for roughly $3.6 million in 2013, a year before they married, in what was then considered a lofty price for the Central Harlem neighborhood. They spent the next 14 months converting it to a single-family residence from a bed-and-breakfast, with help from the architect Jeffery Povero and the interior designer Trace Lehnhoff. In its earlier days, the building reportedly had also served as a speakeasy for Irish mill workers and a schoolhouse for girls.
The couple painstakingly restored and maintained much of the original architecture, like the carved moldings and numerous built-ins, oak floors, tin ceilings, and ornate staircase of oak, sycamore and ash, while also adding a few modern amenities and period pieces. “We both wanted to respect the history of the space, of the area, and yet make it feel contemporary and creative and accessible,” Mr. Harris said.
The 20-foot-wide brownstone has about 8,000 square feet, with four bedrooms, plus a library/den that could be converted into a fifth bedroom, along with four full bathrooms and two half baths. There is also a home theater, laundry room and a full basement with a gym, wine cellar and a playroom for their 10-year-old fraternal twins, Gideon and Harper.
The exterior space measures nearly 2,000 square feet and includes a terraced rear garden, a third-floor deck, an outdoor Jacuzzi off the primary bedroom suite, and a massive, irrigated roof deck with a barbecue and a wisteria-covered pergola.
“The roof deck is like a backyard in the sky,” Ms. Barron said, adding that “the whole house lends itself to entertainment.”
Mr. Harris and Mr. Burtka, who is also a chef, have held numerous parties and dinners there over the years. “There are just so many places to entertain,” Mr. Burtka noted. Guests often gathered on the roof deck or around a handsome wood and glass bar salvaged from a Connecticut hotel. And before they left, they were invited to pick one of the many drawers of a custom apothecary cabinet on the main floor, each filled with a playful parting gift. Some of these get-togethers were detailed in Mr. Burtka’s book “Life Is a Party,” a collection of recipes and tips on entertaining published in 2019.
Throughout the home are the couple’s collection of contemporary art from artists like Tom LaDuke and Kehinde Wiley, along with an assortment of taxidermy and magic and sideshow memorabilia, like the robotic parrot, and there’s a player piano. Mr. Harris — who has appeared in numerous films, TV shows and theater productions, including the comedy-drama “Doogie Howser, M.D.” earlier in his career — is a magic aficionado, just like his character in “How I Met Your Mother.” He has performed at the Magic Castle in Hollywood, Calif., and once served as its president.
The home’s main entrance is through a grand front door atop a classic stoop. A foyer leads to two parlors. The front portion contains the staircase (there’s no elevator), a music room, powder room and a walk-in closet. The parlor toward the back features the bar and a gas fireplace, one of three in the house. Nearby is a prep kitchen and doors to the terraced garden.
The floor below, the garden level, houses the home theater, formerly a conference room, and contains office and storage space. “It has a separate entrance,” Ms. Barron said, which might be attractive to some buyers. “If they have an office at home and you have people that need to come and go every day, they can enter without disturbing your private home, which is a huge value.”
On the third floor is a living room anchored with a fireplace, a formal dining area, and a large kitchen equipped with a pantry, custom cabinets and Caesarstone countertops with a marble backsplash. Beyond the kitchen is a deck with a built-in gas barbecue.
The bedrooms are on the top two floors. The primary suite is on the fourth level and features a spalike marble bathroom, with another fireplace and the Jacuzzi. Opposite the bedroom is a tin-ceilinged library/den.
Mr. Harris keeps an office hidden behind a trick door on the fifth floor. It opens by pressing the eyeball of a magician on a vintage poster, according a 2015 profile of the brownstone by Architectural Digest, and contains original art from the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland, more magic posters and props.
Mr. Harris, though, didn’t divulge too much about the secret room in his email. “That’s a, umm, secret,” he said, “hence the, umm, name of the room.”

Many of us are carrying a little bit more weight now than when we were in our 20s. However, as tempting as it is to blame this weight gain on a slowing metabolism, that may not actually be the case, according to a study released last week in the journal Science.
In this study, scientists found that once you adjust for weight and body fat percentage, metabolic rates remain stable from ages 20 to 60. What this means is that during that time, your body doesn’t change how many calories it burns just because of your age—instead, your metabolism is tied to your body size and the amount of body fat versus lean mass that you carry.
Why we are still learning how our metabolism works
If you are wondering how a single study can upend everything we thought we knew about our metabolism, that’s because most of our conventional wisdom isn’t based on solid, substantive evidence. The reason for this is because the studies that can answer these questions are expensive, which made it impossible to get a big enough sample size that would offer a rigorous, evidence-based answer of how our metabolism changes with age.
“It’s hard to believe that in 2021, a paper that says, ‘This is how metabolism changes with body size and over the lifespan,’ is news,” said Herman Pontzer, an associate professor of evolutionary biology at Duke University, who was one of the lead authors for the study. “We haven’t been able to get the sample sizes. Getting even 100 people in a metabolism study is usually considered a pretty big number.”
In order to get these numbers, Pontzer, along with about 80 collaborators, combined data collected from multiple labs using the “doubly labeled water” method, which is considered the gold standard in the field of metabolism studies. They compiled a database containing the metabolism data of more than 6,400 study participants, ranging in ages from 8 days to 95 years.

“We haven’t had those numbers to play with before,” Pontzer said.
This gave them a big enough sample size to finally answer the question of how our metabolism changes over the course of our lifetime.
How your metabolism changes over your lifetime
What they found was that, once you adjust for weight and body fat percentage, our metabolism peaks at 1 year old, declines by about 3% per year until you reach 20, then stays stable for the next 40 years, after which it will decline by about 1% per year.
In terms of our own metabolism, if your weight and body fat percentage stay the same during that time, your daily energy needs will not vary. However, if you remain the same weight but some of your muscle mass is replaced with fat, then your body will need more energy each day. However, this change would be a factor of weight and body fat percentage, rather than a fundamental change in your metabolism.
On a cellular level, “your cells are just as busy when you are in your 50s as they were when you were in your 20s,” Pontzer said. However, once you hit 60, your metabolism does change on a fundamental level, with your cells using a little bit less energy as time goes on.
The good news is that weight and body fat percentage are factors you can change. For example, if you have more muscle mass now than you did in your 20s, this would mean your body would have a higher daily energy requirement now than it did then.
They also found that, once you adjust for weight and body fat percentage, men and women burn calories at the same rate. Granted, women tend to have a higher body fat percentage than men, but if you compare men and women who are of the same weight and same body fat percentage, on average, “they would have the same energy expenditure,” Pontzer said.
What to focus on if you are gaining weight
Practically speaking, this means that if you are gaining weight, it’s not because your metabolism is slowing down. Instead, there are probably other factors at play, such as diet and exercise, which are all too easy to let slip in face of all the adult pressures that tend to hit when you are in your 30s and 40s.
This study doesn’t get into why we often gain weight as we get older, but it provides reassurance that a slowing metabolism is not the reason. It also gives us a roadmap for adjusting our weight that is simple (if not easy): Losing fat and/or increasing muscle mass will keep our calorie burn high. That means healthy eating and strength training are especially important as we get older.
When you are faced with a stocked pantry of highly processed food after a long, exhausting day from juggling work, family, and other responsibilities, it’s easy to eat just a little bit more, while also struggling to find the time to get in the activity your body needs to maintain your muscle mass. Over time, this adds up.
The good news is that the database that allowed Pontzer and his collaborators to finally answer these questions about our metabolism is now public access, which means any scientist who would like to use the data can, as long as their proposed research adheres to all ethical guidelines for using patient data. What this means is that we will be able to learn even more about how our metabolism actually works in the years ahead.
“The surprise from this work isn’t that it contradicts previous data, because there just wasn’t any data,” Pontzer said. “The surprise is that when you go and measure this, the biology is surprising in ways you don’t expect. I think there is going to be a lot here to learn.”
Gnats and other small flies are annoying to get rid of. A small number of them is bad enough, but an infestation can mean a lot more effort. There are several remedies we’ve covered before, like apple cider vinegar traps, but there’s a plant that can help solve your gnat problems, too.
What is a Mexican butterwort plant?
Mexican butterwort is a carnivorous plant of the succulent family. The thick flower-like leaves produce a sticky substance that attracts small flies like fungi, gnats, and fruit flies, and they’re caught in the sticky trap where their interaction triggers the plants’ digestive enzymes.
The Mexican butterwort, also known as pinguicula, has 46 named species and comes in various shapes and colors. And since some species can be as small as one to two inches in diameter, they are perfect as tiny houseplants. TikToker TannerThePlanter gives a short tutorial on the bug-eating plant.

The best time of year to buy a Mexican butterwort plant
You want to buy Mexican butterwort during the late spring and summer. In the fall and winter, this fly-eating plant goes into a sort of dormant stage where it doesn’t trap as much. If you buy one between October and March, you’ll receive the plant during its “winter succulent phase,” as California Carnivores describes.
How to care for a Mexican butterwort houseplant
Before buying your plant, know that Mexican butterwort is not the easiest to take care of, but a little attention goes a long way if you like plants and hate bugs.
These succulent plants are native to Mexico and love full direct sunlight. They’re also rare in that they’re a part of the succulent family, but don’t need any special soil. Similar to soilless plants, the Mexican butterwort attaches to rocks and hillsides, grabbing nutrients from the air and anything around them, so this little carnivorous plant can live without much assistance. However, they do love moist environments in contrast to their desert succulent cousins.
You’ll want to imitate the plant’s natural humid climate and have a constant pool of water for it to stay moist. This plant is definitely one to keep with the other humid-loving plants in the bathroom (especially if you have drain flies.) Once the plant enters its dormant phase, water it like a regular succulent and only after the soil has dried out.
Since Mexican butterwort plants take nutrients from their surroundings, you don’t need any plant food. Fertilizer can even hurt your carnivorous plant, so leave the fertilizer for your other plant babies. Instead, Houseplant Central suggests putting dried bloodworms on the sticky leaves during the growing season for extra nutrients.
If you ever find a young bird with scruffy feathers, hopping around looking sort of clueless, with no parents to be seen, you might think it’s in trouble and needs to be rescued. But that’s probably not the case. Most likely, you have just found a fledgling.
Fledglings are the awkward teenagers of the bird world. They’re too old to live in a nest, but too young to fully take care of themselves. While injured birds and actual baby birds (without real feathers) may be in danger if you find them on the ground, fledglings belong outside of nests. If you need some help telling these categories apart, we have a guide here on what to do if you’ve found a bird that seems to need help.
What fledglings look like
Many of the things that would make you think “hmm, something’s wrong with that bird” are just normal fledgling features.
Fledglings may look weird, but only because their adult feathers may not have fully grown in yet. They may have different coloration from the adults, or streaky patterning that helps to camouflage them. They may also have big mouths, the better to open them and beg for food from mom or dad.
They may not be able to fly well, either; they’re still learning how, and developing their feathers and muscles. You might see a fledgling hopping around on the ground or hiding in the bushes instead of taking wing.

I see tons of fledglings in my yard, and they’re just goofy little kids. One day I saw two grackle fledglings perched in a tree outside my office window. They hopped and puttered around until their parent came back with a mouthful of worms. This parent went back and forth between the two of them, trying to feed them but getting more and more exasperated; I think it was trying to get them each to take one worm instead of the whole mouthful. I remembered the times I had brought two screaming toddlers to a restaurant together, and felt a deep empathy.
Why you should leave fledglings alone
No matter how young and stupid a fledgling appears to be, it’s in the right place if it’s outdoors, outside of a nest, and isn’t obviously injured. Fledglings’ parents have to leave them alone, sometimes for hours, to go off and get them food to eat.
If you find a fledgling in a dangerous place, like in the middle of a road, go ahead and move it to a safer spot nearby. But don’t take it home or whisk it off to a wildlife rehabilitator. If you do that, you’re kidnapping someone’s child. Fledgling birds do better in the wild with their parents than at a rehabilitator. Remember, the parents are feeding it, and they also have the job of teaching the goofy creature how to be a bird.
If you’ve picked up a fledgling and it’s only been a short time (less than a day), go put it back—the sooner the better. Its parents are probably out there looking for it.
