Current CDC recommendations state that people need at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise every week to maintain their physical and mental health. This is good news. After all, while getting deep into fitness can do wonders for your health, not everyone is willing or able to go that far. If you are struggling to find free time between work and home obligations, spending hours at the gym every week just isn’t an option.

Instead, you can get the exercise you need by going on a walk for 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week. Or do it for 1 hour a day, three days a week. Whatever works for you. The CDC also recommends at least two days of strength training every week, as this type of training comes with its own sets of benefits. This can be achieved by doing a simple set of push ups and squats.

2 – Diet and weight

It’s no mystery that being overweight is a risk factor for heart diseases, but what and how you eat also plays a big role in this issue. Foods that are rich in fats and salt can both put a toll on your cardiovascular system.

This means that while in the long-term you should aim to maintain a healthy weight, in the short term you can protect your heart by lowering your salt consumption and adding more whole-grain foods to your diet. The latter will provide the nutrients needed to keep your heart healthy, as well as the rest of your body.

3 – Take care of your mental health

Sadly, the data on this is clear. Patients who suffer from depression, anxiety disorders, or severe stress are all more likely to suffer from heart conditions than the average population. This includes the full range of heart problems, from hypertension to strokes and other issues.

This is yet another reason why taking care of your mental health is important. Fully cooked, ready-to-eat chicken may be a convenient way to add some protein to a meal, but if you have any in your fridge right now, you’re going to want to check the label.

That’s because almost 9 million pounds (8,955,296 pounds, to be exact) of Tyson chicken products are part of a massive recall over concerns that the foods may be adulterated with Listeria monocytogenes, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS). Here’s what to know about the recall.

Which Tyson chicken products are part of the recall?

There are quite a few products included in the recall, and the full list can be found on the USDA’s website. The potentially contaminated items have a few other things in common. They all:

  • Are frozen, fully cooked chicken products
  • Were produced between December 26, 2020 and April 13, 2021
  • Have establishment number “EST. P-7089” on the product bag or inside the USDA mark of inspection

The Tyson branded products were sold in retailers throughout the country, including Walmart, Target, Kroger, Publix H-E-B, and Wegmans, USA Today reports. Additionally, the recalled chicken is also sold at restaurants like Jet’s Pizza, Casey’s General Store, Marco’s Pizza, and Little Caesars.

According to the USDA, other than retailers and restaurants, the Tyson chicken products were also shipped to institutions nationwide, including hospitals, nursing facilities, schools, and Department of Defense locations.

As anyone gotten sick from the recalled chicken?

As of July 9, 2021, the CDC has received reports of three people who fell ill with listeriosis after eating the Tyson chicken, and one death. Listeriosis is a serious infection that primarily affects people with weakened immune systems (because age, illness, or pregnancy) and can cause fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms, according to the USDA.

What to do if you’ve purchased the recalled products

First of all, don’t eat them. Either throw them away, ore return them to the retailer where you purchased them for a refund.

Consumers with food safety questions can call the toll-free USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at 1-888-MPHotline (1-888-674-6854) or live chat via Ask USDA from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (Eastern Time) Monday through Friday. Consumers can also browse food safety messages at Ask USDA or send a question via email to MPHotline@usda.gov.

For consumers that need to report a problem with a meat, poultry, or egg product, the online Electronic Consumer Complaint Monitoring System can be accessed 24 hours a day at https://foodcomplaint.fsis.usda.gov/eCCF/.

A recently launched Tik Tok and Instagram brand have picked up thousands of followers within weeks of launching. The Bottom’s Digest showcases cookery videos with one thing in common: All the recipes have been designed with bottoms in mind.

We all know that to maintain a healthy digestive system, it’s advised to eat plenty of fiber. To help keep yourself as clean as possible, some foods are recommended while there are others you might want to avoid. That’s explored in more depth by Alex Hall, 28, of Austin Texas.

Hall works as a graphic designer. He’s also now the “Chief Eating Officer at The Bottom’s Digest.”

“I’ve relied on my skillset as a graphic designer to get this project off the ground, including designing the logo and creating all the social assets.”

Hall’s husband films the videos and Hall edits them.

Hall told Queerty the idea for the videos came up when he was living in NYC and questioning what he wanted to do as a “forever” career.

“I remember thinking while making dinner one night: ‘I love graphic design, but will I love it when I’m 50?’ No matter how busy I am, I always make time to cook. That’s when it dawned on me…I just want to cook.”

He continues: “Before working as a graphic designer, I was a bartender for years in the Houston gay scene, and the idea of going back to the ‘industry’ to cook didn’t sit well with me. I’d been cooking without dairy for a few years and I adopted a plant-based diet in NYC because meat was too expensive.

“I immediately noticed the benefits in the bedroom after I made these dietary changes. I love to have dinner parties, and I would push my diet on my friends without telling them; it was exciting to see those same benefits pass into their lives as well.”

“I really started to cook up this idea a few years ago while making those dietary changes, and now The Bottom’s Digest is an intersection of my love for cooking delicious recipes, eating healthy food, and working remotely. Creating this show checks all my boxes, especially my passion for helping others,” says Hall.

“I really wanted to create something that destigmatizes talking about poop in the bedroom,” he adds.

“Shit happens. Don’t get in the pool if you don’t want to get wet! No one deserves the shame that sometimes comes with that conversation, and everyone should get to reconnect with food that makes them feel good.

“This show is meant to empower bottoms to feed their soul with delicious, healthy food, and then fill themselves with their partner without so many worries and cramps.”

Since launching at the start of June, Hall’s Tik Tok channel has picked up 29,000 followers. Popular recipes include this one for dairy-free Alfredo, based on a recipe Hall’s mom used to cook him as a kid.

What exactly makes a food bottom-friendly?

“We all have different bodies and digestive systems,” says Hall. “But from what I’ve tested with my recipes, there are a few things that make a dish bottom friendly.

“First, simply make it dairy-free. I’m not sold that our bodies were even built to handle cow’s milk so I shy away from it 100%. Second, make it mild. Depending on the heat level, spicy food can aggravate your stomach and make bottoming uncomfortable. I’m definitely not saying to give up spicy food! I LOVE spicy food. But if I’m feeling hungry for my husband, I don’t mess with spicy food for at least a couple hours before I hit the sheets.

“Stay away from processed foods as much as possible. Period. Third, and my strongest weapon, make recipes plant-based and load it with fruits and veggies.”

Hall says he has been “shocked” by the reaction to the videos.

“I knew we had a good idea here, but I wasn’t expecting such a quick response from our audience. I’m incredibly grateful. I feel like this is a sign that I’m doing the right thing, like I am actually meant to cook for a living.

“My audience is so kind and they ask great questions about substitutions all the time. I honestly feel like I’m at a queer bar when I’m in the comments section.”

Coronavirus Briefing: What Happened Today


For the Fourth of July, President Biden has invited 1,000 military personnel and essential workers to a party on the South Lawn of the White House to celebrate “independence from the virus.”

But my colleague Sheryl Gay Stolberg reports that some experts fear that such celebrations send the wrong message “when wide swaths of the population remain vulnerable and true independence from the worst public health crisis in a century may be a long way off.”

White House officials argue that the president is not declaring victory, but rather celebrating the country’s achievements. It’s certainly true that the U.S. has made significant progress against the virus. New daily cases are steady at about 12,000, the lowest since testing became widely available and down from about 200,000 on Inauguration Day. For the first time since March 2020, the country is averaging fewer than 300 newly reported deaths per day, a decline of about 20 percent over the past two weeks. Hospitalizations are also dropping.

But the advances have been uneven, with a large portion of cases emerging in a handful of hot spots, particularly where vaccination rates are low. Those places include Las Vegas, rural Utah, rural Arkansas, Cheyenne, Wyo., and the Missouri Ozarks.

Nationally, the vaccination campaign is plodding along, with about a million shots administered each day. Biden had hoped that 70 percent of adults would be at least partly vaccinated by July 4, but the number stands at about 67 percent.

A truer measure of protection, experts say, is whether people are fully vaccinated — a status that only 46 percent of Americans can claim.

At the same time, experts fear that if the Delta variant continues to spread, it will mutate in a way that leaves even the vaccinated vulnerable.

White House officials are not requiring guests at the July 4 party to be vaccinated, although they will be asked to provide proof of a negative coronavirus test.

“We’re still in the middle of this marathon,” said Dr. William Schaffner, an infectious disease expert at Vanderbilt University. Despite considerable progress, he said, it remains too early to “unfurl the ‘mission accomplished’ banner.”

Many people highlighted one hidden benefit to an incredibly difficult time: extra time with loved ones.

“The pandemic allowed my husband and me to spend more time with our teenaged children — who would otherwise have had much cooler things to do than hang out with mom and dad,” wrote Carolyn Gandy from Atlanta. “We shared old family recipes and our favorite movies and books with them and they taught us a lot, too. We made TikTok recipes and watched anime together. I will always treasure the unexpected time we got to spend with them.”

Before the pandemic, Debbie Rhoades from Woodbine, Md., said she saw very little of her husband during the week. He had a demanding job and long commute, and when they both began working from home, she saw it as “a very unexpected ‘experiment’ to see if we would drive each other nuts during retirement.”

But during the last year, Debbie reported, “We got lots of rest and discovered we still really like each other after 36 years of faithful marriage and raising three sons.”

David Klein from Suffern, N.Y., started taking care of his 1-year-old grandson while the boy’s parents worked.

“Reuben and I went from crawling on the ground together to running together. We went from pops monologue, to Reuben and pops dialogue. We had exciting excursions to the airport to watch planes and our daily stroll to the corner to watch cars and trucks go by,” he wrote. “I look at those 6 months as a blessing in a very dark time.”

Nancy Hembree Flynn, from Los Gatos, Calif., whose father in North Carolina was battling lung cancer, said the pandemic gave her a little extra time.

“I probably would not have been able to take as much time to go back and be with my father through all of his surgeries and treatments without being able to work from his home,” she wrote. “He died last December and I treasure all of those days I was able to spend with him.”

On June 23 we celebrated midsummer and it was the first party I went to since the pandemic began. It was a gathering of close friends and family at my sister’s lakeside house. Leading up to the party, I was so afraid to be close to so many people again that I had my mask in my pocket just in case. It ended up being the best night I’ve had in the last 1.5 years! We played games and danced while not being two meters apart! After going to bed I realized that during the party, Covid did not even once cross my mind. With the soles of my feet still aching from all the barefoot dancing, there is just one thing I wanna remind people — get vaccinated, it feels amazing!

There’s a video on YouTube I keep coming back to, even though I absolutely hate it. It’s a 46-minute mix of songs titled “Lofi glug glug mix – beats to drive/study to.” The buzzy, mostly wordless electronic tracks are set to an animation of an anime girl driving a car with a cheerful Shiba Inu hanging its tongue out the window. It’s a lot like other lo-fi mix compilations on YouTube, except in this one, there’s a tiny red car with a Conoco logo on the anime girl’s dashboard. That’s not an accident: The video was produced not by a random YouTube DJ, but by the official account of Conoco, a giant chain of gas stations owned by Phillips 66. (The “glug glug” in the title apparently refers to the sound of gas being pumped into a car.)

“No joke this actually isn’t too bad as late night cruising music,” the top comment reads. “Mad props to Conoco on this one as this is 🔥🔥🔥.”

I really, really hate that I agree.

Most oil and gas companies seem to struggle with how to present themselves on social media, isolating their brand presence to strictly photos of refineries on Instagram or making cringy statements about Pride on Twitter. Some have started dipping a toe into Instagram influencer marketing; an Earther investigation last month revealed that Shell has worked extensively with Instagram influencers, most recently on a campaign to promote a carbon offsets scheme for their gas. (Phillips 66 also worked with influencers on an Instagram campaign.)

But Conoco stands out from its competitors: Its social channels are filled with content they’ve created that’s actually interesting, mostly because it has absolutely nothing to do with gasoline. In one Instagram story, a makeup artist paints their face and chest to resemble a mountain scene, complete with gondola; there’s a short that starts off with a man whose body is a cat tree; there’s a whole series called Conococooks, which features “recipes” with illustrations for foods like “Thrilled Cheese” and “Hamburgizzadog.” The whole thing is well-designed and a little disorienting, meaning I spent a lot of time on their account just looking at posts (which, I suppose, is the goal of a social media campaign). The vibe is somewhat reminiscent of Brand Twitter, the ever-growing ecosystem of companies who attempt (sometimes too far) to assert a personality—think of how the Steak-Umms account keeps picking fights with Neil DeGrasse Tyson—but with a remove that makes it not too annoying.

Reaching a younger, Very Online crowd, it seems, is Conoco’s whole goal here. Most of Conoco’s social content appears to have been produced by Carmichael Lynch, an ad agency based out of Minneapolis. (Carmichael Lynch also ran the Phillips 66 campaign where it tapped Instagram influencers.) In a case study posted on their website, the agency sheds a lot of light on the goal of all this strange posting from a gasoline brand.

“Conoco wanted to reach 18-24-year-olds, a hard-to-engage audience,” the case study begins. “Skeptical of marketing and unlikely to interact with brands, they sit, text, curate and retweet in an endless stream of #content.”

Surveys have found that around 70% of this age group also experience eco-anxiety due to the climate change caused by the product Conoco is trying to sell them. But, of course, that wouldn’t make for a very good brand campaign. (Carmichael Lynch didn’t answer questions as to whether young people’s concerns about climate change were part of their conversations with Conoco.)

The result of the analysis is a campaign called Choose Go, which, the case study describes, is “a social-first campaign that changed the rules of social engagement by understanding the audience’s perceptions of brands. Instead of forcing advertising-like objects on them, we built content around their interests.” AdWeek wrote a glowing review of the “glug glug” lofi mix video, and per the case study, the campaign generated millions of impressions on social media.

This strategy of increasing brand loyalty while not focusing on the actual product was pioneered by another oil giant. In the 1970s, Exxon sponsored several episodes of the PBS program Masterpiece Theater in one of the earliest examples of a company associating itself with a cultural touchstone to boost brand loyalty. This strategy can be really successful—which isn’t great news for the climate.

“This is why ad agencies are so dangerous: they can take a boring fossil fuel company and turn them into your hip best friend,” Jamie Henn, the director of Fossil Free Media, which runs a campaign called Clean Creatives dedicated to pressuring ad and PR agencies to quit working with fossil fuel companies, said over Twitter DM. “Who cares if ConocoPhillips is blocking climate legislation if they’re sharing dope playlists and funny animations, right? I’m sure the team at CarmichaelLynch had a good time working this account, but creativity has consequences. Shilling for Big Oil is an act of climate denial no matter how cool it looks.”

There could be limits to how far this don’t-focus-on-the-oil-and-look-how-funny-we-are approach can go with other oil and gas companies. I’m not sure if high-profile brands like Exxon will be able to appeal to Gen Z since its name is associated with lying about climate change for decades. Other Big Oil companies like Chevron, BP, and Shell have had a more intense and unforgiving spotlight put on them for their role in delaying climate action.

One of the reasons this particular strategy seems to have been able to succeed here is that Conoco hasn’t come under the same scrutiny, perhaps because it only sells gas. But it does have a dirty history: ConocoPhillips, its predecessor company, produces about 1.5 million barrels of oil per day. In 2012, ConocoPhillips, then the third-biggest oil company in the country, split its oil-and-gas producing arm from its oil-and-gas selling arm; the resulting companies are ConocoPhillips and Phillips 66, which owns Conoco.

Phillips 66 and ConocoPhillips have done quite well since then: They are currently the fifth-largest and third-largest oil and gas companies by market share in the U.S. And at the end of the day, selling all that oil is what these kinds of campaigns are for.

“Conoco sold 40 million more gallons of gas in the campaign’s first five months compared to the year prior,” Carmichael Lynch concludes their case study proudly. Let’s hope none of the other oil companies figure out how to replicate this success.
